You’ve probably heard of the terms self-esteem and self-worth before. At face value, they appear to mean the same thing. Though the terms are related, many healthcare professionals and researchers in the field of psychology agree that there is a difference between the two.
Self-Esteem is what you think about yourself at any given moment. How you evaluate yourself is typically based on external things like, what other people think of you, what you got done today, the way you look, etc. Your self-esteem can easily fluctuate as your thoughts and feelings about yourself may change based on your present circumstances.
Self-worth, on another hand, is a bit more consistent. Self-worth is how you define your intrinsic worth or value. Having high self-worth is believing you are valuable by birth because your worth is inherent, and unchanging, no matter your circumstances. When this is established and strengthened, you are more likely to have high self-esteem. If you have low self-worth, you are more likely to struggle with self-esteem.
Low self-worth and low self-esteem can lead to a variety of negative outcomes. This includes low quality relationships, poor decision-making skills, lack of motivation, harmful thoughts and behaviors, a decline in physical wellness, and more.
